Transylvania 4x4 Tours specialises in tours to the Carpathian mountain range. This area is one of the last true wilderness areas of Europe with the largest population of bears and wolves. We offer the following services; expert guides taking you to areas rarely seen by passing tourists; expedition support and overland itinerary planning; wildlife tours; 4x4 and motorcycle support including off road recovery. Whether you are touring by 4x4, motorcycle, camper van or bicycle, we have it covered!

Touring with your own vehicle

If you like mud on your tyres then Transylvania is the place for you! Many people are travelling further afield with their 4x4 vehicles to find adventure. Driving to places such as Africa will require time and money, so if you are limited to a two to three week holiday why not try Transylvania? It is in Europe and every every bit as demanding as driving in the African bush.

Many of our customers prefer to tour using their own vehicles. We can either accompany you in your vehicle, or lead using ours. If you would prefer to be in front we can follow giving occasional directions by CB radio.

Accommodation can be arranged in local guest houses or maybe you would prefer to wild camp? Trips can be arranged from single or multiple point locations.

For any maintenance and repairs, you are welcome to use our workshop facilities. We also hold a small range of Land Rover parts should you need something more than you carry in your boot. For more complicated repairs I have made arrangements with a local general garage that can cater for most of your requirements. We also have a qualified British mechanic who specialises in 4x4 vehicles joining our business in April 2009.

If you would like to tour Transylvania alone, we can also assist you with mapping and itineraries.

Crews making films and documentaries can also be catered for. In 2008 we hosted a film company making a documentary about villagers living in close proximity with bears. We can provide a secure lockup for both film equipment and vehicles. Logistical planning is what we are good at, so please apply for more details.

Seasonal driving conditions (in general)
Spring - warm with occasional showers, but often muddy after the winter thaw
Summer - warm to hot, dry and dusty
Autumn - warm and dry with occasional showers.
Winter - Usually very cold with plenty of snow above 1000 metres. Bring your snow chains!

Points to consider
The larger the group the lower the individual shared cost.
If you are touring Transylvania in one vehicle then please consider the safety aspect of travelling off road with a second vehicle accompanied by an experienced guide. Many of the places we travel to are out of mobile telephone signal range!
When planning costs for your journey across Europe please remember that fuel in continental Europe is cheaper than in the UK
